Professor Sir Roger Penrose, a world-renowned physicist and mathematician at the University of Oxford will give the annual Southampton Theory Astrophysics and Gravity (STAG) Research Centre lecture on Wednesday 20 October at 14:30. All the tickets are now booked but you can register to watch the live stream.
Arguably the most compelling questions in modern physics revolve around the nature and origin of the Universe, the properties of the most extreme gravitationally collapsed objects — black holes — and the fundamental nature of gravity. Professor Penrose has made enormous contributions to our understanding of all three through his pioneering work on singularities and the quantum-scale nature of gravity. In this lecture, entitled “The Problem of Space-Time Singularities—Where does this Lead us in Cosmology?” Professor Penrose will present a novel solution to the `singularity problem’ through the application of Conformal Geometry.
Dr Matthew Middleton, Director of the STAG Research Centre, said: “It is a tremendous honour and privilege to have Professor Sir Roger Penrose delivering the 2021 STAG Public Lecture. Professor Penrose is one of the leading theoretical physicists of his generation and his work has revolutionised the way we think about the nature of gravity. Like everyone else, I am excited to hear his insights into the frontiers of fundamental physics.”
