Gravitational waves

The Southampton Theory, Astrophysics and Gravity (STAG) Research Centre brings together different research groups with world-leading expertise on issues relating to fundamental physics and astronomy.

STAG researchers are interested in problems ranging from the ultimate building blocks of matter to dynamics on cosmological scales, and actively engage with high-profile international experiments and observational facilities.  STAG runs a regular interdisciplinary seminar series, hosts international visitors and arranges high-profile research colloquia including the annual STAG lecture.

STAG provides a unique collaborative environment by bringing together and supporting several leading research groups. Together we aim to push the frontiers of theoretical physics, astrophysics and gravitational physics at Southampton.

Gravity

Research conducted by the Southampton Gravity group focuses on gravitational waves, general relativistic spacetimes around black holes, and the properties of ultra-dense matter in neutron stars, such as superfluidity and superconductivity of nuclear and quark matter.

String Theory and Holography

The group works on all aspects of fundamental physics - string theory; quantum field theory; applications to gravity, black holes, cosmology, particle physics, condensed matter and quantum information.

Astronomy Group

We study space and cosmic phenomena above the Earth’s atmosphere.

Southampton High Energy Physics (SHEP) group

We explore the underlying theories of particle physics from collider phenomenology to string theory and from lattice quantum chromodynamics (QCD) to beyond the Standard Model physics and cosmology.
