Hands-on Humanities Day 2023

Hands-on Humanities Day is the University’s annual free family-friendly celebration of the Humanities organised by the Public Engagement with Research unit.

Join researchers, community groups and artists at the Avenue Campus on Saturday 18 November, 10:30 – 16:30, for a fun day packed with interactive activities, workshops, talks, exhibitions, and live performances, suitable for all ages.

The programme includes contributions from four Faculties, the LiveSoc and ArchaeoSoc Society’s as well as external exhibitors including Southampton Voluntary Services, New Forest National Park Authority, Maritime Archaeology Trust, Southampton City Libraries, The Brickworks Museum and Theatre for Life.

Get ready to adventure through the arts of microscopic worlds, walk around an archaeological site in Minecraft, and have your senses surrounded in the Digital Humanities Igloo. Unearth artifacts, explore ancient locations, and get creative while writing a poem or making ink prints.

From archaeology, history, and philosophy to films, writing and music, through to the arts, along with just a pinch of science, there’s something for everyone to enjoy!

Attendance is free, but registration is required. Find out more and explore the programme.

Hands-on Humanities Day takes place in partnership with the Southampton Institute for Arts and Humanities (SIAH), Southampton Voluntary Services, New Forest National Park Authority and, as in past years, the event is part of the Being Human festival, the UK’s only national festival of the humanities, taking place 9 – 18 November. Led by the School of Advanced Study, University of London, in partnership with the Arts and Humanities Research Council and the British Academy.
