LGBT+ History Month 2025 – Activism and Social Change

LGBT+ History Month is marked every February across the country to celebrate and raise awareness of the contributions of LGBT+ people. This year’s theme is “Activism and Social Change”.

Throughout history, LGBT+ people have been activists and helped shape and create social change, advancing society for everyone.

Queering Connections: Glitchy Kinship
31 January – 15 March, The Winchester Gallery, WSA
Experience a unique collaboration between sociologist Lizzie Reed and artist Milou Stella at Winchester Gallery, featuring Stella’s artworks and Artists’ Books from the University of Southampton’s collection, exploring the transformation of connections through disruption and queering.

LGBT+ Flag Raising

Join the PULSE LGBT+ Network in marking the start of the month by raising the Progress Pride flag at the Jubilee Plaza.

Southampton Stonewall Lecture 2025: The Shape of Sex: A History of Nonbinary Gender Before Modernity
Thursday 27 February, 18:00 – 20:15pm, Avenue Campus
Leah DeVun’s lecture examines how premodern European ideas (200–1400 C.E.) about nonbinary sex and gender shaped notions of humanity, offering insights into modern debates on identity.

Get Support:

LGBTQ+ Society (SUSU) aims to provide an inclusive and safe space for LGBTQ+ students to socialise with one another, allowing them the freedom to discover and express who they are without judgement.

TransMission peer support group is for any student who identifies as transgender, non-binary or is questioning their gender identity.  The group is a safe space to meet and support each other in a confidential and private space. Upcoming group dates and future events can be found on the My Southampton App.

Beyond Reflections is a local charity offering support in the form of face-to-face and online support groups, counselling, wellbeing drop-ins, and third-party hate-crime victim support.

Stonewall is an external charity that offers guidance through their information service and a variety of resources.
