School of Healthcare Enterprise and Innovation launches unique master’s programme

The Faculty of Medicine’s School of Healthcare Enterprise and Innovation (SHEI) has launched a brand-new MSc, which will be the first of its kind in the UK.

Professor Cheryl Metcalf

Medical Technology, Innovation and Design (MSc) is designed for students from a multidisciplinary background who are passionate about healthcare innovation and want to create their own healthcare start-up or work in the broader technology industry.

In a pivot away from the traditional lecture and assessment-based approach, students will receive a real-world experience where they will be working alongside clinical experts, business mentors, entrepreneurs and have exposure to investors.

Global healthcare and responsible innovation are at the core of the new MSc. The course itself consists of two projects, one in the UK and another in a low or middle income country. This will ensure that graduates will be able to find solutions to global problems and not just high-tech solutions for high income countries.

Head of SHEI, Professor Cheryl Metcalf, said: “I am delighted that our new MSc has been launched and humbled that it is the first of its kind in the UK. From ideation to commercialisation, this MSc will help students bring their healthcare innovations to life and create a new type of graduate.

“We can’t wait to welcome our students in September 2025.”
