Microsoft has announced that it will be stopping support for Windows 10 on 14 October 2025. As a result, the University will need to replace or upgrade its approximately 10,000 computer assets currently running Windows 10.
The upgrade to Windows 11 is essential to maintain the quality, security and integrity of the devices in operation at the University, and the data handled using these devices.
What will the upgrade look like?
Upgrading to Windows 11 will look different depending on the device you currently use for work.
Most devices issued in or after 2019 will be compatible with Windows 11, however depending on how the device is managed, the way in which the device will be upgraded will vary. Inform yourself of the different upgrade pathways on the Windows 11 SharePoint site.
Most devices issued before 2019 will not be compatible with Windows 11 and will therefore need to be replaced with a newer device, if still required. If you have been identified as needing to replace your primary work laptop, you will be contacted via email with an invitation to book a laptop replacement slot at one of the Tech Hubs across our campuses. If you use a desktop as your primary work device, you will be contacted by email once we are ready to begin replacing desktops.
We will be staggering the upgrade rollout across faculties and professional services to reduce downtime and relieve stress on our service desk and tech hubs. As a result, you will be notified when you are able to upgrade to Windows 11. We are currently piloting the upgrade within iSolutions, and will use the lessons learned to inform the roll out across the rest of the University. Do I need to do anything?
Before you upgrade your device, there are a few things we recommend you do to ensure a smooth transition from Windows 10 to Windows 11:
- Ensure that your device has the latest Windows 10 updates installed, including device drivers and firmware. If your device is not up to date before upgrading to Windows 11, it can cause delays during or after the upgrade process which can affect your ability to continue working. Learn how to check your device is up to date by reading this knowledgebase article.
- Make sure you have enough storage space on your device before upgrading to Windows 11. You will need a minimum of 50GB on your device to upgrade. This knowledgebase article contains advice on freeing up storage space.
- While freeing up storage space, take the time to move your important files into OneDrive. This will not only free up space on your computer, but will also ensure that they are backed up, preventing the loss of important work during the upgrade process. Be sure to check your OneDrive has been synchronised if you’re backing up large amounts of data. More information about OneDrive is available on the knowledgebase.
What about other devices?
Not every device managed by the University is a Windows device. Some run MacOS, others run Linux, and devices such as smartphones and tablets use their own operating systems. These devices are out of scope for this project. You will not be contacted about upgrading to Windows 11 unless your primary work device is a Windows device.
What if I have more than one device, or I no longer need my device?
If you have more than one device, you no longer need your device, or you have any old devices or equipment, you can return them to iSolutions, where they can either be reassigned or recycled. Recycling old devices and equipment is key for our sustainability goals as a university, and as part of this, we have worked with our disposals contractor, Converge UK to ensure that every single piece of tech that we dispose of is either reused or recycled. Converge are independently certified by Valpak as a zero-landfill business. Visit the Converge UK website to find out more about device recycling.
To make sure your old, unused, or unneeded equipment and devices are sent to the correct team for disposal read this Knowledgebase guide on how to return, reassign or dispose of university-owned IT equipment.
