Module overview
The Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) require that a pre-registration nursing programme must contain a minimum of 2,300 practice and 2,300 theory hours (4600 hours total). Given that this is more than can be achieved in the two years of either the PgDip or the MSc programmes, additional hours of relevant learning must be demonstrated through Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) procedures as an admissions requirement. All programme learning outcomes are achieved and assessed in the core programme, and this RPL claim is made only in respect to hours of relevant learning, and is made in accordance with the University of Southampton’s Recognition of Prior Learning Policy.
This document relates only to the RPL claim which all students must make as an entry requirement to the programme. The Nursing and Midwifery Council permit recognition of prior learning (RPL) against any part of the programme where the applicant is able to demonstrate relevant prior learning to the satisfaction of the approved educational institution (NMC 2018). Students who have significant additional learning (for example, registered nurses who are seeking registration in a second field of practice) may wish to make a specific RPL claim in addition to this claim which is a standard admissions requirement. Under the University of Southampton RPL regulations, up to one third of the programme may normally be accredited through this process.
