Module overview
Global Society is a content-based interdisciplinary module which introduces you to contemporary world issues. You will explore a wide range of concepts, trends and problems which impact upon global society today including, but not limited to, global economics, the role of international organisations, the effects of globalisation, international aid, health, education and human rights.
You will be encouraged to consider your own country in relation to others and their chosen academic disciplines in the context of these themes. The module will encourage the students to think of yourself as a ‘global citizen’ who is preparing to study at an outward-looking university with an international focus.

- This module is intended to prepare you for your undergraduate programme in two ways. Firstly, you will improve your knowledge of a range of current topics which will provide you with valuable background knowledge for your future academic a career. Secondly the lectures, seminars and assessment tasks will allow you to practice and develop the English language and the academic skills you are learning in the other core modules of the IFY programme; IFYP0001 English for Academic Study and Critical Thinking and Research Skills IFYP0002.
Syllabus
This module introduces you to a range of key concepts such as capitalism, trade, globalisation, human rights and international aid, as well as the international organisations which monitor, maintain and control the ways in which global society is structured. Alongside this, the module examines a number of today’s ‘big’ issues including climate change, world poverty, health, education, migration and global security. Using a range of teaching methods and media, the module aims to draw connections between these multiple themes in order to encourage a better understanding of the complexities of today’s modern world.
The syllabus content will be adapted and updated to include any important current economic, political and social themes.
