Having successfully completed this module you will be able to:
- Write a formal report of your study, including abstract, background literature, aims, methods, results, discussion, and references
- Apply appropriate biomedical, psychological or social science principles; or principles relating to population health to an area of practice and/or investigation
- Develop time management skills in the planning, execution, and completion of your research project
- Demonstrate that you can take responsibility for your own learning and your continuing professional development
- Demonstrate the application of Research Governance guidelines
- Develop and apply critical thinking to the work of your peers
- Develop and demonstrate oral presentation skills, regarding your research, to peers and staff
- Design a research project in relation to a research/service evaluation/audit question or hypothesis, justifying the methods selected, and applying the principles of evidence based medicine
- Apply and build on the team working skills acquired in years 1 and 2 to work as part of a multi-disciplinary team
- Collect and analyse data appropriate to your study, using skills gained in the Research for Medicine and Health module
- Demonstrate an appreciation of the importance of health and safety in the research setting for example safe lab practice, COSHH, lone working.
Syllabus
Students will undertake a research project chosen from a broad range of Fields that may be laboratory based or clinical or a mixture of the two and may employ a diverse range of methodologies and procedures, including audit, interviews, surveys, clinical, and basic laboratory science techniques. Students can also opt to undertake a systematic review.

This 16 week module is undertaken from the beginning of September to the end of December during Year 3. You will build on the skills gained from the Research in Medicine and Health module undertaken in Year 2.
Under the guidance and mentorship of your supervisor and their team, you will undertake the collection/extraction of data and analysis for the practical research project or systematic review during this time period. Learning methods will also include independent learning, extensive reading, writing drafts of reports for discussion and feedback, and practice presentations.
You will receive support from your supervisor, the Head of Field and Deputy Module Lead for your School or other groups in which your research project is based and the Faculty of Medicine.

Assessment
Assessment strategy
The Research Project is assessed by a combination of approaches as detailed below. There is no compensation between the written report and the project conference components so both of these must be passed in order to pass the module. However, the mandatory supervisor assessment of student performance is formative only; provided for feedback and development and students do not need to achieve or exceed any specific pass mark in order to pass the module. It does not contribute to the overall module mark. However, those students receiving a mark of <40% will have the opportunity to discuss their performance with the Module Lead, the Deputy Module (assessments), and or the Year 3 Lead.
Students awarded greater than 70% for both the written report and the project conference may be considered for the award of prizes.
Students will need to take an additional assessment if they fail either the written report or the conference presentation assessments.
Each assessment has a supplementary opportunity.
