I am a member of the Maritime Engineering teaching team at Southampton University where I have been employed as a Senior Teaching fellow since 2011 to teach Ship Design. I see myself primarily as a Naval Architect.
My teaching focusses on studio-based design work on ship and maritime engineering topics. This spans individual and group working and covers subjects such as concept design, structural analysis, resistance estimation, sea-keeping, stability, overall vessel layout, etc. As an experienced practical ship designer, my aim is to set our work in a realistic industrially oriented context, using real life data and augmented by inputs from practising industrial designers from a range of collaborating companies.
I am a qualified naval architect. I was trained by the UK Ministry of Defence over seven years becoming a Constructor in the Royal Corps of Naval Constructors. My training included a BSc in Mechanical Engineering and a masters in Naval Architecture, both from University College London. Following my initial training I first worked on the pressure hull design of the Trident nuclear submarine fleet. Following this I worked for DG Future Material Plans (Naval) as a warship concept design specialist. Following a career break to raise a family I joined the University of Southampton as a specialist ship design teacher where I have been instrumental in leading the design curriculum followed by our students.
