About
Ali Elham is Professor of Multidisciplinary Design Optimisation in the Department of Aeronautics and Astronautics. Ali received his Ph.D. from Delft University of Technology in 2013 on Multidisciplinary Design Optimisation of Lifting Surfaces. Before starting his position at the University of Southampton in January 2022, he was Professor of Aircraft Conceptual Design and Director of the Institute of Aircraft Design and Lightweight Structures at TU Braunschweig, Germany. Ali’s research interest and focus include developing and applying multidisciplinary design optimization techniques to support the design of the next generation of transport aircraft towards zero-emission. His current research activities include the design of novel aircraft configurations, electric/hybrid-electric as well as hydrogen-powered aircraft design, coupled-adjoint aerostructural optimization, and multiphysics topology optimization. He is also actively developing computational methods for aerodynamic and structural analysis and optimization to support aerospace vehicle design.
You can update this in Pure (opens in a new tab). Select ‘Edit profile’. Under the heading and then ‘Curriculum and research description’, select ‘Add profile information’. In the dropdown menu, select - ‘About’.
Write about yourself in the third person. Aim for 100 to 150 words covering the main points about who you are and what you currently do. Clear, simple language is best. You can include specialist or technical terms.
You’ll be able to add details about your research, publications, career and academic history to other sections of your staff profile.
