Module overview

Reading the works of ancient Greek authors in the original language facilitates a deeper understanding of some of the most influential historical sources and works of literature ever produced. ‘Ancient Greek I’ will equip you with the ability to comprehend basic ancient Greek, both as written text and spoken word. You will learn how to pronounce (classical Attic) Greek, while acquiring a useful range of common vocabulary and practising the rudiments of ancient Greek syntax and grammar. By the end of the module, you will be able to translate simple passages from Greek to English and English to Greek, and to apply your knowledge of the language to draw conclusions about the structure and purpose of a text. The module will also enhance your understanding of ancient Greek culture: all linguistic content is introduced with accompanying discussion of the literary and/or societal contexts in which it was used. The language skills acquired in this module can be readily applied to other dialects of ancient Greek, including Koine.
