Interdisciplinary Dementia and Ageing Centre

We are a network that brings together local expertise from across the research spectrum within the University and University Hospital Southampton. Our aim is to increase understanding of dementia and brain ageing and how to treat and care for people with these conditions.

The Interdisciplinary Dementia and Ageing Centre (IDeAC) is the close collaboration between academics (who are testing ideas), NHS staff (who are involved in day-to-day diagnosis and care), engineers (for technological development and modelling), mathematicians (for modelling processes) and industry (who develop new treatments). The IDeAC network includes basic scientists, clinicians, health and social care delivery researchers, epidemiologists, imagers, mathematicians, and computing and data scientists. The network consists of four synergistic themes, each covering a range of specialties within the field of dementia research and care.

As the brain is enclosed in the skull and inaccessible the tools that we need to use must be advanced, multiple and from different disciplines including mathematics, physics and engineering. This is why IDeAC is leading the way internationally for uncovering the causes of the disease, ways of preventing it and exciting new avenues for treating dementias.
