About

Dr Ruohan Tang is a Teaching Fellow at the Winchester School of Art, University of Southampton, specialising in screen production, visual effects, and immersive media production. His current research explores sound visualisation in VR galleries and the spirit of place in virtual environments. He is also the co-investigator in the Global Smart Lab at Winchester School of Art. He teaches in the MA Global Media Management Program, leading the Critical Media Practice Module. He holds professional certificates in Unity for Artists and also professional certification in Python Programming.

His upcoming chapter, "Sense of Presence as Historical Authenticity in Rebuilt Virtual Environments for VR Documentary Storytelling", is set to be published in the Bloomsbury Handbook to Global Contemporary Documentary. He is also the author of "Aural Authenticity of Virtual Reality Documentary Made in 3D Virtual Environment", published in the Interactive Film & Media Journal.

Dr Tang is committed to promoting equality and diversity in documentary production. Alongside Dr Yi Zou, he co-authored "Language, Cultural Identity, and Spirituality—A Case Study of the Representation of Minority Ethnic Subjects in Ethnographic Documentary", featured in The Journal on Ethnopolitics and Minority Issues in Europe. He also authored "Portraying Traumatic Ego: A Case Study of Documentary Screenwriting in Presenting Visually Impaired Subjects" in the Journal of Screenwriting.

In addition to his academic pursuits, Dr Tang has a professional background in the film industry, having worked as a post-production producer and international producer. He was the international producer for the documentary film ‘Invisible Summit’ directed by Lixin Fan, which was released in theatres in 2023.
