This module will introduce you to the principles around sustainability, luxury and artisanship. You will learn how to produce work informed by contemporary knowledge of sustainable, ethical and innovative practices in the luxury textile sector. You will gain knowledge and insight about the global, cultural, historical and ethical contexts of artisanship and the relationship with luxury and sustainability. You will learn how to research, reference and create visual storyboards to show your understanding of Sustainability, Luxury and Ethical Artisanship. You will also be introduced to the foremost innovative materials, processes and technologies. You will explore and experience colour theory, chemistry and processes for textiles and play with colour and materials whilst learning knitting, weaving, printing, felting and stitching techniques. You will experiment with a broad range of textile materials, processes and techniques whilst considering the responsible values and sustainable aspects of your practice. This module will evaluate and evolve your digital skills and competencies. You will assemble technical folders with samples to demonstrate your making skills and produce colourways to show your understanding of the importance of colour in textiles. You will be introduced to academic skills, how to research, reference and think in an analytical critical way to evaluate and improve your learning and development.

You will receive regular formative assessment with verbal and written feedback and feedforward to enable you to assemble a portfolio of experimental technical work to demonstrate your learning through the year. This module will induct and train you how to use machines and equipment safely, and work responsibly and professionally, in the studio and workshops.
