Having successfully completed this module you will be able to:
- Describe how cellular degradation pathways such as autophagy function and their relationship to disease
- Describe the mechanisms regulating vascular development
- Explain the structure and function of mitotic spindle
- Describe how eukaryotic genome is organised in interphase nuclei and in mitotic chromosomes
- Explain how chromatin is structured and regulated
- Describe the structure and function of centromeres and kinetochores
- Describe the organisation and function of the extracellular matrix (ECM), including cellular interactions with the ECM and key molecules involved.
- Explain how specific components of the cytoplasmic cytoskeleton are structured and function.
- Explain key factors in stem cell biology
- Describe or explain the underlying cell and developmental biology of other selected topics covered in the module with focus on current research.
Syllabus
The module provides an advanced level module that will give students insight into selected topics in cell and developmental biology. These topics cover the structure and function of eukaryotic genome, chromosomes, the cytoskeleton, the organisation and function of the extracellular matrix, the mitotic spindle, stem cells, cellular degradation mechanisms, and vascular development.
