Having successfully completed this module you will be able to:

• Distil a scientific concept/methodology/idea so that a general audience can understand it
• Be familar with the presentation of statistics to a lay audience
• As part of a team, produce a report that is based on data generated by the team.
• Generate video presentations of a science story suitable for a lay audience
• Be able to write for a non-scientific audience in the form of a blog and a newspaper article
• Develop treatments or storyboards of a science topic as the guide for generating a video science story, suitable for a lay audience
• As part of a team, develop a multimedia presentation based on the report generated by the team.

This module is a practical based approach to Science Communication, involving written and oral presentations, that aims to delivery science topics to a lay audience through various media approaches.

The module is assessed throughout Semester 2 based on prepared work including written articles in the style of a blog and a newspaper article and the production of a 1 minute video. This approach teaches a more basic and subjective form of science communication before graduating to a less subjective, more detailed version. The individual science-based video allows for a creative aspect of communication to flourish.

In Semester 2, assessment involves students completing two activities throughout the semester as part of a team:

1. Generate a structured report based on a topic that the students decide. From this topic the team able to generate data that forms the basis of the report. Initiation of this work will begin in Semester 1 to ensure that all potential ethical and personal data issues are considered.

2. Presentation of the report using a multimedia approach that involves the all team members.
