The module will cover recent advances in selected areas of molecular cell biology explaining key aspects of cell and molecular biology required to understand these studies. The relevance of these studies to advancement of medical science will also be explored.

Having successfully completed this module you will be able to:
- The role of immune system in regulating antitumor responses and the mechanism of action of immuno-oncology agents in cancer therapy.
- Key aspects of apoptosis and its mis-regulation in cancers.
- Regulation of cancer development tumour suppressors and proto-oncogenes. The processes whereby cancer cells metastasise.
- The role of stem cells in normal physiology, and their potential for therapy. The potential of in vitro fertilisation (IVF) and preimplantation genetic diagnosis.
- The theory of cancer evolution and its clinical implications.
- The importance of interactions between tumour cells and their microenvironment on cancer development and treatment.
- Basic outline of control of the cell cycle and cell metabolism. The role of dysregulation of these processes by genetic and epigenetic changes in the progression and treatment of cancer.
- The processes that occur during acute brain injury, and the pathogenesis of acute neurodegeneration..
