Module overview
The project is a Group learning experience that enables you to apply your knowledge to the design of a complex building/structure in an urban context that responds to (a) social, (b) technical and (c) environmental/contextual aspects of a built environment problem. You will negotiate with your 'client', be it your supervisor or an external sponsor, develop your brief, plan your project, present and develop your work through drawn/written and oral presentation maintaining a clear record of design development. At all times you will monitor your progress to ensure you are achieving the objectives set while ensuring quality of output.
Aims and Objectives
Learning Outcomes
Transferable and Generic Skills
Having successfully completed this module you will be able to:
- Critically evaluate your project work to identify positive outcomes as well as areas for self-improvement (contributing to meeting AHEP 3 - G2).
- Understand your role and responsibilities in contributing to effective team working, the need for clear leadership roles and personal/ project management to realise an integrated design solution (contributing to meeting AHEP 3 - EL3, D5, P1, G3, G4).
- Apply a range of communication skills to effectively engage with others throughout a design process and to communicate your proposals to technical and non-technical audiences (contributing to meeting AHEP 3 - D6, G1).
Knowledge and Understanding
Having successfully completed this module, you will be able to demonstrate knowledge and understanding of:
- The importance of developing an integrated design solution that delivers qualitative and quantitative that is valuable to the end user (contributing to meeting AHEP 3 - EA3, EA6, D1, D7, D8, P8)
Subject Specific Intellectual and Research Skills
Having successfully completed this module you will be able to:
- Understand the role of an integrated approach in resolving a complex design problem (including the evaluation and refinement of a client brief, analysis and information coordination) (contributing to meeting AHEP 3 - EA4, EA6, P8).
- Research and develop innovative conceptually proven solutions (including architectural and structural design concepts, functional requirements, material choice, construction (design-for-manufacture and disassembly) and the design lifespan) (contributing to meeting AHEP 3 - EA1, EA2, EA3, EA5, P1, P2, P4)
- Understand and demonstrate the application, through design decisions, of a projects contexts (physical, social, economic, political, legislative, cultural, ethical, risk and environmental), stakeholders and user requirements in developing a sustainable solution (contributing to meeting AHEP 3 - EL2, EL4, EL5, EL6, D1, D2, D3, D4, D7, D8, P5, P6, P7, P9, P10).
Subject Specific Practical Skills
Having successfully completed this module you will be able to:
- Apply a range of engineering design processes, including computer aided design, to resolve and present a design solution (contributing to meeting AHEP 3 - EA3).
Syllabus
This is a design project focused module which will encompass:
- Design process, including: the interpretation and resolution of a client brief, concept development and selection and analysis.
- The effect of the environmental context, the user experience and stakeholder requirements to achieve a sustainable design solution.
- The coordination of architectural and structural design concepts, functional requirements, material choice, construction and the design lifespan; including design-for-manufacture and disassembly.
- Team working, leadership and project management, including the coordination of individual roles and an integrated approach to design coordination.
- Communication and presentation skills.
Learning and Teaching
Teaching and learning methods
This is a design project focused module where students work in groups to develop and communicate a solution for a given design brief. Teaching and learning methods include:
- Group workshops, tutorials and regular presentations.
- Collaborative learning particularly between your group members and other students taking the module.
- Open door policy by Module Lead.
- Self-directed learning.

Resources & Reading list
General Resources
General Module Resource. - Texts and references will be recommended according to the design brief set each year and to your specific area of interest and investigation. These are generally available online or from the library. - Licenced academic versions of Computer Aided Design, presentation and analytical engineering software are available on university computers and to download for use on your own computer. These include AutoDesk, Adobe and structural analysis packages. - You have extended access to the Civil Engineering and Architecture Design Studio, which includes the use of an A0 plotter, as well as the use of the School of Engineering design studios, workshops, computing facilities and specialist testing facilities. - A budget of £300 plus £80 per student is available to support this project.
