Module overview
This module familiarises students with the main empirical methodologies used in addressing economic question and in analysing and evaluating economic policy. Econometric methods will presented and applied to actual economic issues, including using appropriate statistical software.
Aims and Objectives
Learning Outcomes
Subject Specific Intellectual and Research Skills
Having successfully completed this module you will be able to:
- interpret and evaluate the results of econometric analysis in a range of contexts
- apply adequate econometric methods to address economic and policy questions using data
Knowledge and Understanding
Having successfully completed this module, you will be able to demonstrate knowledge and understanding of:
- the key methods in econometrics to address economic and economic policy questions
- the strengths and weakness of alternative approaches to estimation and testing
Transferable and Generic Skills
Having successfully completed this module you will be able to:
- Apply adequate statistical software to analyse data
Syllabus
Topics covered are:
- Econometric modelling of economic data.
- Hypothesis testing and confidence intervals
- Least squares inference in the simple linear regression model.
- The multiple regression model: Testing and models specification.
- Causal inference
This module will cover both techniques of estimation and methods for testing and evaluating results. Emphasis is placed on providing you with practical experience of working with actual economic datasets and using a standard econometric software package (such as Stata) for data analysis. Students will be acquainted with the use of adequate statistical software during practical sessions in computer labs
