Having successfully completed this module you will be able to:

• Choose appropriate research methods to explore issues of inclusion and social justice.
• Demonstrate an awareness of the contradictions between policy and practice in relation to social justice and inclusion.
• Explain the ways in which individuals or groups of people can be included in various contexts.
• Analyse empirical and theoretical data to present and justify a personal position in relation to social justice and inclusion.

Societies are increasingly diverse nowadays. This module aims to explore the complexity of the concepts of social justice and inclusive education and how everyone can contribute towards the development of a more inclusive world. This will be achieved by exploring critically the policies and practices in relation to individuals or groups of learners who have been traditionally marginalised such as those defined as having special educational needs, ethnic minorities, travellers, those from low socioeconomic backgrounds etc. There will be a special focus on how research can promote inclusion and social justice.

Topics normally covered in this module will include:

• Exploring inclusive policies and practices
• Labelling theories
• Developing inclusive practices for all
• Research that promotes inclusion and social justice
• Engaging with the views of participants to promote inclusion

This module will use a mix of lectures and seminars along with directed reading and suggested additional research. The focus will be on small group discussion, plus small group presentations. Typically this module is taught through 9 sessions of two hours plus one week of individual tutorials.
