I am a Professor of Philosophy at the University of Southampton, where I have taught since 2011. During the 18-19 academic year I was a Visiting Research Professor at the Murphy Institute at Tulane. I spent Autumn 2014 as a Visiting Fellow at Harvard. I am an Associate Editor for Journal of Ethics and Social Philosophy, an Area Editor for Ergo, and a member of the Analysis Trust Committee.
My research focuses on issues in ethics and epistemology, broadly construed. I am especially interested in issues to do with reasons, rationality, value, and normativity, across the epistemic, practical, and affective domains. I recently completed a book, Getting Things Right: Fittingness, Reasons, and Value, with my colleague Conor McHugh (Oxford University Press, 2022; online here).

I enjoy teaching both within and beyond my research areas. In the last couple of years I have taught the 3rd year modules PHIL3041 Happiness and Well-Being and PHIL3035 Rationality, Responsibility, and Ethics, the 2nd year module PHIL2040 Metaethics, and a module for Medicine students on Ethics and Philosophy. I have supervised undergraduate and MA students on a range of individual research topics, including animal ethics, philosophy of race, death, political philosophy, and metaethics.
Before coming to Southampton, I was a lecturer at the University of Stirling, a graduate student at the University of California, Santa Barbara, and an undergraduate at the University of Bristol.
