Jordan Cheer is a Professor at the Institute of Sound and Vibration Research and Royal Academy of Engineering Research Chair in Smart Acoustic Control Technologies. His research covers both active control of noise and vibration and sound field control for audio reproduction. He is also currently a Subject Editor for the Journal of Sound and Vibration focusing on Signal Processing and Data Science and Associate Editor for the Journal of the Acoustical Society of America focusing on Noise.

Current research
Professor Cheer’s research interests focus on the active control of both sound and vibration. This encompasses both the reduction of unwanted noise and vibration and the enhancement or manipulation of wanted sounds. Jordan's research is currently supported by the BAE Systems/Royal Academy of Engineering Research Chair in Smart Acoustic Control Technologies.

Biography
Jordan graduated from the University of Surrey in 2008 with a BMus (Tonmeister) in Music and Sound Recording. In 2009 he received the MSc in Sound and Vibration from the Institute of Sound and Vibration Research (ISVR) at the University of Southampton, with a thesis on the design of directional loudspeakers for mobile devices. Following this he carried out his doctoral research in the Signal Processing and Control group of the ISVR on the subject of active control of the acoustic environment in automobile cabins. This was funded by the Green City Car Project which was part of the European Commission 7th Framework Programme. Having received the PhD in 2012, he was then appointed as a Research Fellow in Active Control at the ISVR. He was promoted to Senior Research Fellow at the beginning of 2015 and later in 2015 was appointed as a New Frontiers Fellow. He was promoted to Lecturer in 2017, Associate Professor in 2019 and Full Professor in 2023. He was awarded a prestigous 5-year Royal Academy of Engineering Research Chair in 2024, which focuses on Smart Acoustic Control Technologies.
