About
Dr Matt Grote is a Research Fellow in the Transportation Research Group within the Faculty of Engineering and Physical Sciences at the University of Southampton.
His research interests are primarily concerned with the effects of transport systems on the environment, in particular the impacts of atmospheric emissions from vehicles and practical methods for reducing their detrimental effects.
Prior to entering academia, he worked for fifteen years as a pilot for a large, global airline, giving him extensive practical experience of aviation operations.

Current research
Matt is currently working on the E-Drone project and is involved in several areas of research, including:
Investigation of the benefits of integrated logistics involving the use of drones (Uncrewed Aerial Vehicles, UAVs) alongside traditional last-mile delivery solutions based on a case study of transportation of NHS pathology samples and medicines in the Solent region.
Investigation of the opportunities for shared-fleet logistics whereby organisations collaborate to improve vehicle utilisation by sharing vehicle capacity and consolidating loads, therefore reducing costs, vehicle-kilometres and associated detrimental emissions.
