Current research
Hyperacute research studies including clinical trials in thrombectomy (ESCAPE-MEVO), thrombolysis (ATTEST 2 and OPTIMIST), ischaemic preconditioning (RECAST 3), preventing pneumonia (MAPS 2) and treatment of intracerebral haemorrhage (TICH 3).
Secondary prevention studies (OPTIMAS, OCEANIC, LACI 2/3 and ENRICH-AF trials)
We are working with the genetics team to screen for clopidogrel resistance acutely in stroke patients, and with the materials team at the Univesity of Winchester to try and create a sleeve / glove to stimulate upper limb recovery using functional electrical stimulation.

Teaching
Undergraduate teaching at University of Southampton including seminars, tutorials and bedside teaching in stroke medicine
Postgraduate teaching for the MRCP exam, and I examine for the Edinburgh Royal College of Physicians and host the exam in Southampton 3 times a year.
Simulation training - this includes multidisciplinary teaching and training for stroke team members, paramedics, and medical staff including a variety of scenarios about interhospital and prehospital video triage and transfers of care, and simulation of patients eligible for thrombolysis and mechanical thrombectomy.

Biography
I was appointed as a Consultant Stroke Physician at University Hospital Southampton in 2014, and since that time have developed a keen interest in hyperacute stroke research, and founded the NIHR Hyperacute Stroke Research Centre (HSRC) in 2018. We have gradually expanded our research studies and in 2023 were the 6th highest recruiter into stroke studies in the UK.
I trained in London, Wessex and Oxford and undertook a stroke fellowship in Bournemouth and Southampton
