Dr Helen Dromey is Principal Teaching Fellow in Music Education and Enterprise, Associate Director of the Centre for Music Education and Social Justice, and teaches mainly on the Education pathway of MMus Music.
Her research investigates how instrumental teaching can be adapted to improve pupils' engagement and partners with music hubs and charities to support inclusive pedagogies. This work draws on Helen’s wealth of experience of teaching the violin and viola in individual, small- and large-group settings, including Whole-Class Ensemble Tuition (WCET). Also a qualified primary school teacher, Helen has previously worked as a Music Coordinator, delivering classroom Music at Key Stages 1–2, and was Lead Teacher for Strings for West Sussex Music.
Besides her work for Southampton, Helen is Course Leader for the European String Teachers Association (ESTA) PG Cert, supports UK Music Masters teachers through observations and consultancy, contributes resources to ABRSM’s new Teacher Hub, and continues to teach the violin and viola.
Helen gained her PhD from University of York in 2024. Her thesis includes a report on an action research project designed for post-WCET learners, who were taught using a new approach she calls "Be a musician" (BeAM). Helen's earlier qualifications include BMus Music, MMus Historical Musicology (both King’s College, London), PGCE (University of Chichester), and LRAM (Royal Academy of Music).
