About
Joe is an historian of ancient Rome who specialises in classical rhetoric, Latin oratory, and the politics, society, and culture of the late Roman Republic. His wider interests and enthusiasms span the subdisciplines of Classics and Ancient History, from epigraphy and numismatics, through poetry, to philosophy.
Joe leads and instructs on a range of courses across the ancient history syllabus, including modules on institutions of slavery, leadership in Greece and Rome, and the reception of the ancient world in the modern day. He teaches Ancient Greek and Latin language and literature, and is currently establishing a Faculty reading group for Latinists of all interests and abilities – please get in touch if you are curious!
Joe serves as the History Department’s ECR representative and arbiter elegantiae for its social media accounts.
