Project overview
Stimulus Fund Project
People with severe speech and language impairments rely on augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) to support existing speech and language impairments or replace non-functional speech. Special augmentative aids include picture and symbol communication boards, and speech generating devices. Personalising and customising these to suit user needs, takes time and is hard to achieve without suitable pictographic symbols or images. There is also the issue of skills and time to create the symbols and copyright licences with cost implications.
This project aims to explore the idea of using generative AI models for open licence symbol-to-symbol style transformation based on a recently developed repository of freely available AAC pictographs. The importance of developing images in a style that matches already developed symbols allows AAC users to recognise them more easily as part of their personalised symbol set.
