Project overview
This project, undertaken in conjunction with Network Rail, examined seven new track systems and compared them to baseline ballasted and unballasted systems. This considered whole life costs, including carbon.
An assessment method based on simple additive weighted multi-criteria analysis was developed, with the Pugh matrix used to determine weights. This was operationalised and validated through two workshops of European rail experts from seven organisations. The focus was on mixed traffic lines with speeds of up to 200 kmph. Five of the new systems had advantages over the reference ballasted system.
