Research project

Settlement Geography of the Iranian coastal plain: Analysis and dissemination of the Williamson dataset

Project overview

This project focuses on the documentation of Andrew Williamson’s site data of coastal Iran for the purpose of digitally storing and disseminating this unique record on the open-access heritage repository of the Maritime Endangered Archaeology (MarEA) project. The project relies on consulting the Williamson’s archival records of sites dating to the Sassanian and later Islamic periods, combined with the findings of the Williamson Collection Project and remote sensing analysis to establish the location and condition of these heritage places. The digital dissemination on an online database, presents a significant step forward in facilitating the storage, retrieval, and linking of this dataset, which ultimately enables improved research into Persian Gulf archaeology.
