The Mexican Day of the Dead in Covid-19 Times

Project overview

Dr Jane Lavery is a currently conducting research, in collaboration with Professor Nuala Finnegan (University College Cork), focusing on the Mexican Day of the Dead, how this ritual is celebrated in the UK by Mexicans in the diaspora (UK and Ireland) and the impact of Covid-19 on this practice in Mexico and abroad. The intended research outputs include a co-authored book and conferences papers and pubic engagement activities including community engaged art workshops at festivals, school events and a short documentary film.
This project is being conducted in collaboration with Mexicanos en Bournemouth; Mexican-American multimedia artist Emily Wood Ramirez Ahmed, the Mexican Embassy to the UK, film makers Tom Price and Stephanie Beeston, the Hansard Gallery and the Dead Good Days (Southampton).
We have received funding from PER Unit (Southampton), University College Cork, The Mexican Embassy to the UK and support in kind from Tom Price and Stephanie Beeston to conduct these public engagement activities.
