Knowledge and Understanding

Having successfully completed this module, you will be able to demonstrate knowledge and understanding of:

• Understand the fundamental concepts and theory of the finite element method of analysis of structural systems.
• Appreciate the relationship between the theoretical behaviour and requirements for stability design of structures.
• Understand the theoretical background to instabilities and buckling of fundamental structural components such as columns, beams and plates.

Subject Specific Practical Skills

Having successfully completed this module you will be able to:

• Analyse the elastic stability of imperfect columns, beams and plates.
• Use the advanced nonlinear analysis software package ABAQUS for simulation and analysis of structural behaviour.

Part 1: Structural Stability

Introduction to stability concepts; Elastic systems and imperfections; Instabilities in compression column members; Instabilities in flexural beam members; Instabilities in plates 

Part 2: Finite Element Analysis

Introduction to Finite Element Analysis; The Weighted Residuals method; Calculation of the stiffness matrix and load vector of truss, beam and plane elements; Assembly of stiffness and load matrices; Solution by hand of truss and beam problems; Gauss integration; Isoparametric mapping; Solving truss, beam and plane problems using ABAQUS.
