Module overview

Technology needs to be designed and developed responsibly to fit the demands and constraints of users, wider healthcare stakeholders, the health system, society (both now and in the future) and our planet. We need to move away from a disposable and consumables healthcare provision and design out waste during innovation. When we are designing new devices, we need to be thinking about the end of life of those devices. When we need to use single-use devices, we need to be thinking about material composition and decomposition of those materials.

Responsible Innovation in Health Technology considers this, and much more. You will learn about the interaction and balance required between environmental, organisational, economic, population health and health system values.

The principle of Responsible Innovation is central to the programme – it will run through all other modules and empower you to be a change leader in this area.

Syllabus

You will be introduced to and explore the Responsible Innovation in Health Technology framework, a global first and developed at the University of Southampton, which will provide you with the tools you need to design and evaluate broader Health Technologies with a responsible lens. This framework can act as a set of toolkits to help you iteratively design and evaluate any Health Technology in your future careers, giving them and you, the best chance of commercial success.

You will learn about the macro- meso- and micro-analysis and how these factors can influence the success or failure of the MedTech innovation pathway. You will learn how to work with stakeholders from different disciplinary and professional backgrounds, how to ask questions to get to the root of a clinical problem and how to prioritise problem areas in complex clinical specialisms.

You will also learn about economic models that also consider more than profit – specifically the "six capitals" model that encompasses: physical, institutional, natural, social, human and knowledge. As part of these models, you will also learn about ‘externalities’ - the economics of waste disposal and pollution in the context of healthcare but also general consumer products.

You will learn how to evaluate problems and potential solutions based on clinical needs, organisational factors, technical requirements and commercial viability, and embedded throughout the Responsible Innovation in Health Technology framework.

Assessment

Assessment strategy

The assessment for this module is included in both the assessment for UK Healthcare Innovation & Design and Global Healthcare Innovation & Design, both providing substantial opportunity to apply teaching and learning from this module throughout the development of your two projects.

Students who fail any/all of these components will have a supplementary attempt which will be offered through the resubmission of UK Healthcare Innovation & Design and/or Global Healthcare Innovation & Design. Students who fail the supplementary submission will be offered a repeat year.
