Module overview
In this module you will build upon your learning in the preceding 'Foundations of Health Sciences for Nursing Practice'. You will develop understanding and insight into key pathophysiological processes encountered in common diseases conditions. This will include relevant aspects of ageing. In addition, you will be introduced to fundamental and applied aspects of pharmacology, microbiology, genomics and medicines management relevant to nursing practice. A key feature of the module is an investigation of pain mechanisms and pain theory where the complexities and multifactorial nature of painful experiences will be addressed.

Having successfully completed this module you will be able to:
- Demonstrate knowledge of the basic principles of pharmacology, sources of information and the principles that support medicines management.
- Articulate an understanding of genomics in healthcare and the implications for nursing practice.
- Describe pathophysiological processes that are relevant to commonly encountered health conditions, pain and ageing.
- Identify relevant aspects of microbiology and theories of infection prevention related to healthcare practice.
Syllabus
The content of this module will include exploration of key pathophysiological processes related to commonly encountered conditions. The modular content will also introduce you to the basic principles of pharmacology, genomics and microbiology relevant to nursing practice.
Pathophysiology:
e.g. cardiorespiratory and nervous system pathologies, aspects of ageing and pain theory
Microbiology:
Introduction to viruses, bacteria, prions and theories of infection prevention
Genomics:
e.g. definitions, basic theory and the role of genomics
Pharmacology:
e.g. pharmacodynamics, pharmacokinetics, common analgesics and local anaesthetics, antibiotics, introduction to pharmacogenomics
Medicines Management: Key principles (defining medicines; scale of medicines use; routes of administration, concepts of adherence)

This module will use a blended-learning approach, with a range of teaching and learning activities. You will be directed to attend lead lectures or seminars which are identified as essential to underpin your knowledge and future practice.
