Having successfully completed this module, you will be able to demonstrate knowledge and understanding of:
- Identify and describe the nature of some of the key challenges in contemporary public administration
- Link theoretical understandings of key issues and challenges in public administration to practical strategies and solutions
Syllabus
The module will be based cutting-edge research from leading journals in contemporary public administration. Key themes that may be covered include:
- Western vs Non-Western paradigms of public administration
- Institutional racism/misogyny, and the equality, diversity and inclusion agenda
- Administrative burdens and policy feedback
- Austerity, depoliticisation and the retrenchment of the state
- Participation, co-production, and civic technology
- Algorithmic governance and digital-era public services
Learning and Teaching
Teaching and learning methods
The module will consist of independent study (focused around readings, preparation for workshops, and assignments) and weekly workshops. The workshops may combine lectures, guest speakers, small-group discussions and student presentations.
