Biography
John Woollard a senior teaching fellow in computer science education at Southampton Education School, University of Southampton. Following his PGCE and teaching at primary level, he moved into secondary school work. He taught O level and CSE Computer Studies in the 1970s as well as using computers extensively for teaching pupils with special educational needs. John has programmed in BASIC and machine code for the Acorn BBC B, Masters and Archimedes (RISC Windows) computers providing programs for the Blue File (MESU) and writing programming guides in Acorn User and Electron User.
John was teacher-in-charge and head of SEN departments in three different Hampshire schools before becoming a teacher advisor for IT and SEN. During the early 1990s, he had a variety of positions as consultant, advisor and inspector and in 1997 he moved to LSU College, Southampton to coordinate the MSc in computer-based learning and undergraduate computer science.
John joined the University of Southampton in 1998 and completed my PhD in 2004. His research focus is pedagogy and the teaching of difficult concepts in computing, elearning and computer assisted assessment. He currently works across both primary and secondary phase initial teacher training as well as supervise a number of doctorate research students.
John was an original Board member of Computing at School and works on a number of BCS, CAS and university initiatives to promote computing education including: Barefoot academic lead, CAS Tenderfoot coordinator, assessor and steering group member for the BCS Certificate in Computer Science Teaching, the School Curriculum and Assessment Committee and chair of the CAS Assessment wg and Quality Review Panel.
