Current research

I am Director of the Centre for Linguistics, Language Education and Acquisition Research (CLLEAR) and an active member of Debating Ethnography  in the LCL Department at Southampton, and of the Barcelona-based research groups: GREILI/UPF and CIEN/UAB.

I currently participate as a co-researcher in three ongoing research projects:

2019-2024: Coordinated Project: English Immersion as Family Language Policy: Strategies, Mobilities and Investments (2020-2024) (EFINALPO). Founding entity: Spanish Ministry of Education (I+D co-ordinated projects) PI Ana Maria Relano-Pastor (University of Castilla La Mancha) and : Eva Codó (University Autonoma of Barcelona)

2022: “Makers, advocates, and users of language policy as co-creators of sociolinguistic research: onward migrants in London” - Policy Research Fund

Research team: Petros Karatsareas - University of Westminster (PI), Vally Lytra - Goldsmiths University of London (Co-I), Adriana Patiño-Santos - University of Southampton. (Co-I), and Emmanouil Pratsinakis - University of Oxford. (Co-I).  

2019 –2022: Transcultural competence in multilingual and multicultural university classrooms with full English-medium instruction. Languages, attitudes, intercultural sensitivity and identity. (TRANSLINGUAM-UNI) Founding entity: Spanish Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities (PGC2018-098815-B-I00).  PI: Mireia Trenchs (Universitat Pompeu Fabra)

I am currently carrying out my own research on the media produced by Latin America migrants in the UK. My main interests include the subjectivities and forms of socialisation that are constructed within the Latino community radio stations and the press in London and other areas. I was awarded a Small Grant from the Faculty of Arts and Humanities – University of Southampton

Research interests and background

Director of the Centre for Linguistics, Language Education and Acquisition Research (CLLEAR). I have expertise in sociolinguistic ethnography, language socialisation, narrative inquiry, and multilingualism.

I have concentrated on the social processes that are produced in daily-life encounters by focusing on the intersection between language, ideology and positioning.

My interests lie in the area of how young people and adults experience language issues when embarking upon life projects involving mobility. I am currently interested in Family, Language and Memory.
