About
NIHR Academic Clinical Fellow in General Practice. Honorary Senior Clinical Lecturer. Associate Director, Southampton Academy of Research. Academic Career Development Lead, R&D Clinical Research Fellows
I am a postdoctoral NIHR Academic Clinical Fellow in General Practice, having re-entered training following 5 years as a Consultant in Renal Medicine.
I hope to pursue my interests in the use of simple interventions to improve outcomes in patients with long-term conditions and multimorbidity, such as those with chronic kidney disease.

Biography
I graduated in Medicine from Queens' University of Belfast and spent time in Australia and Norway during my undergraduate training. I undertook my pre-registration year at University Hospital Southampton and then remained in Wessex for the remainder of my junior medical training, before taking up a training number in Renal Medicine in North Thames.
I completed a PhD in Clinical Pharmacology and Nephrology at University College London, where I was a key part of the team that delivered the multinational NIHR-MRC EME programme funded REnal Protection Against Ischaemia Reperfusion in transplantation (REPAIR) study. This study demonstrated the potential for a simple, safe and virtually cost-neutral intervention, remote ischaemic preconditioning (RIPC) to improve long-term kidney transplant function.
I completed my nephrology training in Wessex at Portsmouth Hospitals University Trust and then went on to a Consultant post at the Wessex Kidney Centre. I established a Renal Research Group in Southampton, through which I was able to collaborate with the Primary Care and Public Health research teams at the University of Southampton, and worked on a project relating to burden and capacity in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD). Following this work, I was inspired to change track and secured the NIHR ACF in GP.
