Dr Avi Boukli joined the University of Southampton in 2022. They hold a PhD in Law from the LSE Law School as an Onassis Foundation Scholar, with a focus on human trafficking at the intersections of international criminal law, security, and human rights. They have held research and teaching positions at Birkbeck, the LSE, Teesside University, and The Open University.
Avi's work has been addressing themes, which include illegalised migration, media representations of trafficking, poverty, “organised crime”, security, victimisation, coloniality, and environmental harm. Their extensive media experience involves radio interviews and documentaries, including: two documentaries on Environmental Harm filmed in Cerro de Pasco and Ica, Peru; and the BBC documentary series Why Slavery?
Between 2001 and 2015, Avi was the editor in chief of Kodikas Publications in Athens, Greece. Currently, Avi is Associate Editor at the journal Criminology & Criminal Justice. Their monograph "Zemiology and Human Trafficking" was published by Routledge in 2024.
