Masashi is a Lecturer at School of Ocean and Earth Science at University of Southampton. His work investigates the risk of coastal natural hazards like tsunamis or storm surges based on field surveys, laboratory experiments, and numerical simulations. He is also interested in revealing past coastal natural hazards using geological records like tsunami or storm deposits. Before joining University of Southampton, he was a Research Fellow at Earth Observatory of Singapore at Nanyang Technological University. He received his Ph.D. in Civil Engineering from Tohoku University in 2019.
