About the Nutrients and Carbonate Chemistry Facility

This facility is located within the School of Ocean and Earth Science at the Waterfront Campus (National Oceanography Centre, Southampton).

We provide the following analysis for both internal (staff, student projects, and fieldcourses) and external customers:

  • Dissolved inorganic nutrients (Total Nitrate, Nitrite, Phosphate, and Silicate). Ammonium measurements are also available on request instead of Silicate measurements using the salicylate colorimetric method
  • Dissolved Organic Carbon (DOC) and Total Dissolved Nitrogen (TDN)
  • Total Alkalinity and Dissolved Inorganic Carbon (small volume samples analysis available)

Technical specification

The facility is equipped with the following instruments:

  • TOC-VCPN for Dissolved Organic Carbon and Total Dissolved Nitrogen analysis (Shimadzu)
  • QuAAtro 39 nutrient auto-analyser (Seal Analytical) for micromolar dissolved nutrient analysis
  • AS-ALK2 Alkalinity titrator and AS-C3 DIC analyser (Apollo SciTech) for small volume samples
  • VINDTA 3C for Alkalinity and DIC analysis (larger volumes, e.g. research cruise samples)
