RYA Safety Boat

This 2 day course will teach you the skills needed to act as an escort, safety or coach boat for a fleet of dinghies, windsurfers or canoes.

About the course

To join this 2 day course you must hold the RYA Level 2 National Powerboat certificate. You must also have a basic understanding of sailing and windsurfing. 

Our instructors will introduce you to a wide range of topics and skills, including: 

  • boat preparation 
  • boat handling 
  • dinghy, windsurfer, kayak and canoe rescue 
  • towing
  • end-of-day procedures 
  • safety and suitability of craft 
  • local factors and communication 
  • rescuing other water users 

After completing this course, you’ll be able to provide safety or support cover to a range of craft and water users, particularly sailors or windsurfers. 

Safety Boat courses are run on a maximum ratio of 1 instructor to 6 students.

You can cancel or reschedule a booking by contacting the Jubilee Sports Centre. Your options depend on how much notice you give us. Notice periods are based on the date of your booking, not on the start time.

When we might cancel your booking

We might need to cancel a booking if:

  • the weather means we cannot safely run a course
  • staff members are sick and their absence cannot be covered
  • we cannot meet our minimum student-instructor ratio

If we need to cancel your booking, we’ll always try to give you at least 24 hours' notice. We’ll also offer to reschedule your booking.

Location

The course will run at either the University watersports centre or Southampton sailing Club. We will confirmed the location when you book.
