About the Towing tank
Our 138-metre towing tank is the largest university towing tank in the UK.
A bank of wave-makers at one end of the tank generates wave patterns to create a variety of realistic sea states. Using ship models, we can see how vessels are likely to operate in these conditions.
Ship science students use the towing tank to test the design and performance of model ships.
It can also be used in lab sessions and project work - for instance, if you're looking at ways to improve the efficiency of ships or harness energy from the sea.
