About the project
Global climate change is the biggest challenge faced by humanity. Not many people realise that most of the data at the scientist disposal is sparse and limited. It is sufficient for evaluating trends, but falls short in capability of tracking real time processes. This information is essential for scientists, policy makers and whole society to fully understand current situation.
Environmental monitoring has entered a challenging era, where new sensing solutions are urgently required for monitoring our oceans on a global scale with pinpoint precision. This PhD project is aimed at addressing this technological challenge by combining artificial intelligence with forefront photonic technologies. Over the course of the project, you will be developing and fabricating a next generation integrated photonic devices capable of operating in harsh environments, without bulky, expensive, and power-hungry support systems. The research work will introduce you to modern manufacturing and characterization techniques used in developing optical devices and composite materials, and computational modelling of photonic systems. Using AI algorithms you will build a digital platform for real time ocean monitoring to understand what role oceans play in our climate change.
Assessing the performance of these devices for ocean applications will be performed at the world class facilities at the national oceanography centre,
The project has strong commercial potential, with industrial collaborations with local start-ups and global corporations allowing the impact of your research to be seen in real-life applications.
