Module overview
The Period abroad Portfolio is a piece of independent academic work which you complete during your period abroad. The Portfolio comprises of an extended essay in English on a topic relating to either cultural and literary studies, linguistics, social and political studies or history and a recorded oral presentation in the target language based on reflective questionnaires relating to your language learning and intercultural development.

Having successfully completed this module you will be able to:
- identify concepts and data relevant to the task in hand
- select synthesis and focus information from a range of sources in both English and your target language(s)
- define, present and exemplify concepts in the Linguistics, languages and related studies area
Transferable and Generic Skills
Having successfully completed this module you will be able to:
- set and monitor goals , reflecting on your own learning and learning from feedback
- communicate effectively and confidently in English and in at least one foreign language, both orally and in writing
- exercise independence and initiative, particularly during the Year Abroad
- plan and organise your learning through self-management
Knowledge and Understanding
Having successfully completed this module, you will be able to demonstrate knowledge and understanding of:
- one or more aspects of the culture(s), linguistic contexts, history, politics, geography, social and economic structures of that/those country(ies)
- the structures, registers and varieties of the target language(s) and of the methods required to analyse them.
- at least one culture and society, other than your own, and the similarities and dissimilarities between that/those culture(s) and society(ies) in comparison with your own
Syllabus
In this core module you will undertake four pieces of work which combine an in-depth study of a particular topic related to your programme of studies, written in English, with critical reflection on your experience abroad and the presentation of those reflections in the target language through a recorded piece.

- On-going access to level 1 and 2 modules for guidance on the extended essay .
