Dr Pingli Li is an Associate Professor in Accounting, Head of Department of Accounting at Southampton Business School, University of Southampton.
Pingli was the School PhD Director from June 2020 to July 2023 and Programme Lead of MSc Accounting and Management from July 2017 to June 2020 at Southampton Business School.
Pingli's research is impactful in the areas of management control and corporate governance. She takes interests in qualitative research with ethnographic insights. She has conducted interviews with executive and non-executive directors to investigate the independence of the Board of Directors. Her case studies in the areas of management control systems and organizational change have been commissioned by accounting professional bodies, such as CIMA and ICAEW in the UK, and the Ministry of Finance of the People’s Republic of China. The research outputs of those studies have been published on high-quality academic journals and as reports aiming for the audience of practitioners and policy makers.
She is a Global Reporting Initiative (GRI)certified sustainability professional, supervising students in preparing sustainability reports for SMEs.
Currently she is particularly interested in performance measurement and management in healthcare sectors, sustanability reporting for SMEs, the impact of technology on accountants' roles and identities, and the characteristics and effectiveness of Board of Directors.
She serves as Associate Editor of Management Accounting Studies (CMAS, China) and Editorial Board Member of the Qualitative Research in Accounting & Management (ISSN: 1176-6093, Emerald).
Pingli also has extensitive experience in teaching, supervising, examing and programme management at UG, PGT and PGR level. She has acted as external examiner for PhD thesis, UG and PG programmes at a number of UK universities, including Imperial College of London, Cranfield University, University of Essex, Open University and Cardiff University.
