About
David is a health economist and medical statistician with over twenty years of experience in the health technology assessment field. He is a Professor at the Southampton Health Technology Assessments Centre (SHTAC) and leads the evaluation of indirect treatment comparisons on the NICE Technology Assessment Report programme. He also leads SHTAC’s provision of early HTA support for medical devices and digital technologies and currently supports a number of partner organisations on their pathway towards reimbursement.

Research interests
- David’s current research interests focus on indirect treatment comparisons and early health technology assessment (HTA) modelling.
- He specialises in the application and development of methodologies for indirect treatment comparisons of treatments not directly compared in clinical trials. David has taught training courses and published numerous academic papers in this field. Furthermore, he leads SHTAC’s evaluation of meta-analysis and indirect treatment comparison components of company submissions to NICE as part of the TAR programme.
- David’s work in early health technology assessment focuses on medical devices and digital technologies (MedTech). He is currently supporting several academic and industry partners in their paths to reimbursement. David enjoys collaborating with multidisciplinary teams to develop research proposals. He has built decision-analytic models to evaluate cost-effectiveness and conducted value of information (VOI) analyses to inform future research priorities.
- David also enjoys building research collaborations, combining complementary skillsets with university partners and other stakeholders more broadly.

Biography
A health economist and medical statistician with over twenty years of experience in health technology assessment, David has held a variety of senior consultancy and academic roles.
David rejoined SHTAC in 2020, having previously been here from 2000 to 2001. He is a Professor at SHTAC and an Honorary Visiting Professor at the Diabetes Research Centre, University of Leicester. Previously, David was the Global Head of the Health Economics and Epidemiology Practices at ICON plc. Prior to the acquisition by ICON plc, he was an Associate Director at Oxford Outcomes Ltd.
David received an MSc in Medical Statistics (University of Leicester), an MA in Mathematics & Economics (University of Aberdeen), a Diploma in Health Economics (University of Tromsø), and a Certificate in International Business Management (University College Dublin).
David has worked on numerous methodological projects contributing to HTA decision-making, has co-authored over 60 academic papers, and routinely teaches courses on evidence synthesis and health economics.
