Biography
Dr. Sajjad Taravati, a Senior Member of IEEE, is a permanent Lecturer (Assistant Professor) within the Faculty of Engineering and Physical Sciences at the University of Southampton. Prior to joining the University of Southampton, he served as a Postdoctoral Researcher with the superconducting quantum computing group at the Clarendon Laboratory in the Department of Physics at the University of Oxford, Oxford, UK. During this period, he conducted research on the spatiotemporal superconductors and their applications in quantum computers, a cutting-edge field with immense potential.
Beyond his academic pursuits, Dr. Taravati is also the Technological Founder at LATYS Intelligence (latys.ca), a dynamic startup company established based on two pioneering research patents by Dr. Taravati on versatile and programmable space-time metasurfaces. This achievement was made possible through support and investment from the well-known spin-out incubator TandemLaunch Inc. From 2007 to 2010, he served as a Scientific Researcher in the telecommunication industry, where he conducted research on the design and practical implementation of telecommunication transceivers. His work also delved into the intricacies of electromagnetic wave propagation in wireless systems.
From 2013 to 2017, he was a Ph.D. Student and a Research Assistant, where his research explored the realm of nonreciprocal magnetless electromagnetic systems and analog signal processing. In 2017, Dr. Taravati Received the Prestigious Horizon Postdoctoral Fellowship of Canada, and embarked on a Postdoctoral Fellowship under the guidance of Prof. Ahmed A. Kishk, where he made strides in the fields of electromagnetics, nonreciprocity, and space-time modulation. In November 2018, he joined the group of Prof. Eleftheriades at the Department of Electrical Engineering at the University of Toronto, Toronto, Canada, as a Postdoctoral Fellow.
From 2020 to 2022, he extended his passion for teaching as a sessional Lecturer at the University of Toronto (Toronto, Canada) and European School of Antennas (Siena, Italy). Dr. Taravati taught online courses in electromagnetics and telecommunication engineering, sharing his knowledge with eager students. Prior to doing a PhD, from 2011 to 2013, he served as a course instructor and taught several courses to undergraduate students at Raja University and Alborz University, including Electric and magnetic fields, Electronics, Microwave-I, Filter and circuit synthesize, Communication systems, Transmission lines, Antenna laboratory, Microwave laboratory, Satellite communications, Electromagnetic fields and waves, Communication laboratory, Mobile communication systems, Technical English language, Advanced topics in telecommunications, Electrical circuits measurement Lab., Logic circuits Lab., Communication lab., Communication systems II, Electromagnetics-I, Communication systems I, and Digital communication lab..
Dr. Taravati's achievements have earned him several accolades, including
- the Khwarizmi International Award in 2010
- the Outstanding Researcher Student Award from IUST in 2012
- the Horizon Postdoctoral Fellowship in 2018 from Concordia University, Montreal
- the Graduate Student Award in 2018 from Concordia University, Montreal
Notably, he was elevated to the grade of IEEE Senior Member in 2021, a testament to his expertise and contributions.
Dr. Taravati is not only a well-respected researcher but also an engaging speaker and workshop organizer. In 2021, he was a speaker at the Student Chapter of the IEEE Antennas and Propagation Society and played a pivotal role as a speaker and organizer at the 2021 IEEE International Microwave Symposium in Atlanta, GA, USA.
His research legacy is reflected in his extensive publication record, which includes over 30 first-author journal papers and more than 30 first-author conference papers. His review paper on space-time modulation in IEEE Microwave Magazine was featured on the cover of the magazine, and two of his papers on multifunctional spatiotemporal metasurfaces in Physical Review Applied were featured as 'Editor's suggestion.'
Additionally, he holds three valuable patents on dynamic and space-time-periodic metasurfaces, a testament to his innovative spirit and commitment to advancing the field of electrical engineering.
