The Southampton Marine & Maritime Institute (SMMI) is a unique, internationally recognised centre of excellence for research, innovation, and education.
We connect partners from industry, government, and others to researchers from across the University of Southampton to address challenges in marine and coastal environments and human use of the oceans.
Established in 2012, the SMMI leverages and enhances the University of Southampton's expertise which spans ocean science, engineering, maritime law, archaeology, and more. By bridging disciplinary boundaries, showcasing success, and raising awareness we address complex global challenges facing marine and maritime environments.
Mission
Our core mission is to increase knowledge and awareness of the oceans and to develop just solutions to marine and maritime grand challenges at local to global scales. We foster collaborations, educate future leaders, and generate actionable knowledge for businesses, governments, and organisations.
