Damon is a Professor of Geochemistry with research interests in the formation and evolution of the ocean crust, fluid-rock interactions and ore mineralisation, and geochemical analysis. In recent years, his attention has become focussed on the decarbonisation of shipping, ports, and alternative fuels, working to identify and fill essential gaps in knowledge, skills, technologies, testing facilities, and perceptions.

Susan is a Professor of Offshore Geotechnical Engineering and Royal Academy of Engineering Chair in Emerging Technologies – Intelligent & Resilient Ocean Engineering (IROE). Her research addresses technology gaps at each stage of the engineered life cycle of ocean structures and incorporates the intelligence of sensing, robotics, and autonomy to develop next generation resilient engineered systems that will be key to progress in reaching Net Zero.
Professor Fraser Sturt

Fraser is a Professor of Archaeology who specialises in maritime prehistory but applies his expertise and skills to a wide range of interdisciplinary problems and projects. He addresses complex social questions by generating, integrating, and analysing data from multiple sources, often within a geospatial framework. His research increasingly includes contemporary topics such as environmental impact assessment and evaluation or civic and community focused initiatives.

Sue drives forward the activities, events, and impact of the SMMI community, providing coordination and management support, and oversees our funding opportunities and studentships.

Carin promotes networking and collaboration within the University of Southampton and with external partners, contributes to presence at major marine and maritime events, and develops science-led communications.

Dr Wassim Dbouk

Wassim has a background in maritime law and policy. His current research focuses on the legal and regulatory frameworks governing the health and safety and environmental protection aspects around transporting liquified CO2 between UK ports.

This position provides tailored policy engagement support to the SMMI research community and facilitates links with relevant policy stakeholders, working to increase the policy impact of marine and maritime research at the University of Southampton.
